It is the family temple of the Nabeshima family of Kashima Domain which was built in 1677 in imitation of Manpuku-ji in Kyoto. Here, situated in a thick natural forest, the tombstones of the successive lords of the domain line up in an orderly fashion in the sunshine coming through leaves of trees. The temple shows the Obaku-sect style of architecture well. The arrangement of the temple is in the form of a dragon as the area around the two 'Ryugan-no-ikes' (or two 'Dragon Eye Ponds') is supposed to be the head of the dragon and the path to the Kashima family's graveyard is supposed to be its tail. The corridors that extend to the left and right from the Romon (or the two-storied gate) are in the typical Obaku-sect (one of Zen sects) style of architecture.
