Located in the site where Sadamitsu Hara, the governor of Nagato, built Garyu Castle in 1303 during the Kamakura period is Kotohira Shrine (Konpira Shrine). It used to be also called 'Konpira-san over the castle.' Originally, the spirit of the god Kotohira Daigongen was split, and the separated spirit was transferred to this shrine. Sailors in the Funatsu region strongly believed in this god. At that time, a wharf was constructed at the shore of the Hama River flowing into the Ariake Sea so that people could directly pray to the god from the bottom end of the stone steps. This park is also famous for its cherry blossoms. You can enjoy viewing blossoms of about 150 cherry trees of the park at leisure.
