This is a dry beach of the Ariake Sea where you can see the autumn red leaves of the sea, shichimenso, or Suaeda japonica. This area is a stop-over site for migratory birds (shorebirds such as sandpipers and plovers) and their important habitat. There is also an observation hall as well as a viewing platform, and you can observe mudskippers and migratory birds from these places.
The 12th Ramsar Conference of the Contracting Parties was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay in June, 2015, and a 'Ramsar Convention Certificate of Wetland Registration' (or a certificate of the preservation of wetlands) was issued to Shingomori Beach as 'Hizen Kashima Higata.' 'Hizen Kashima Higata' is mudflats spreading at the mouth of the Shiota River and the Kashima River and on the shore. It is an important stop-over site and wintering site for sandpipers and plovers in East Asia.
