It is deeply related to the Omura clan who governed the Fujitsu region in the middle ages. The hilly area behind the shrine was the site where the Matsuoka Castle used to be, and it served as the base for conquering Fujitsu from the Kamakura period when the Omura clan established their rule over Fujitsu throughout the Age of Civil Wars. Every year a mikoshi, the Omuragata lion dance, Nobako Menburyu and the lantern procession got to Wakamiya Shrine and come back here in the Gion Festival from July 13 to July 15.
